index.SG was conceived as a directory of Singapore websites. Its main purpose is to provide a one-stop index of links to websites related to Singapore. 'Related to Singapore' websites include websites about Singapore, websites of Singapore organizations or businesses, websites by individual Singaporeans, or websites with the Singapore ccTLD (.sg) domain.

The core concept behind the organization of the directory is that of category tags. The conventional method of organizing subjects and topics is by a tree-like hierarchy. The constraint of such a system is that links are not easily categorized under more than one subject or type.

The tagging concept, however, allows multiple categories to be easily attached to each site. In doing so, we enable multi-faceted categorization. For example, we could tag a site as 'blog', 'games' and 'forum' which best describes it as a website which contains a blog about games, and which also has an online forum for discussion about games.

This system of categorization is by no means the best nor necessarily superior to other systems. It is but another attempt at a more easily navigable structure for organizing an index of websites.
